Mild Earthquake Hits Baguio City

An unknown magnitude jolted the City of Pines around twelve midnight today. The quake was felt in the city causing the people to notice. Some Facebookers, for example, immediately updated their status right after the earthquake. "Lumindol, ang lakas nun," (There's an earthquake! It's strong!) says one FB user. "It awakened me," says another FB user. (See my Twitter update below.)

Back in 1990, Baguio City was devastated by a killer earthquake that killed approximately 1000 people. It was also the most destructive earthquake in the Philippines.

The Philippines lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, which causes the country to have frequent seismic and volcanic activity. Much larger numbers of earthquakes of smaller magnitude occur very regularly due to the meeting of major tectonic plates in the region.
